Dhaka: Police on Thursday foiled the blockade programme of the agitating students at Shahbagh intersection in the capital demanding immediate cancellation of the quota system in recruitment to government jobs.

Police charged baton and fired several rounds of teargas shells on the students during their demonstration for the second consecutive day.

Witnesses said several hundred students tried to gather at Shahbagh intersection in the morning to press home their demand.

At one stage, police fired several rounds of teargas shell targeting the students and also charged baton to foil their agitation at about 11.00am.

The students also threw brick chips on police triggering a clash in the area turning it into a battle field.

The students vandalised two private cars at Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) on the Dhaka University campus.

They vandalised the proctor’s office and also tried to attack the vice-chancellor’s residence.

A tense situation was prevailing on the Dhaka University campus and also in the adjoining areas.

On Wednesday, in the face of movement of students of different educational institutions, including Dhaka University, Jahangirnagar University, Jagannath University, Dhaka College and Eden College against the public service quota system at Shahbagh intersection, Bangladesh Public Service Commission (BPSC) said it would review the 34th BCS preliminary test results.

The results of the 34th BCS preliminary examination were published on Monday.

A total of 12,033 candidates, out of 2,25,575, have qualified for the PSC’s written examinations.

Meanwhile, Students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) blocked the Dhaka-Aricha Highway in front of the university on Thursday demanding immediate cancellation of the quota system in recruitment to government jobs.

Witnesses said several thousand students of JU under the banner of Sadharon Sikkharthi brought out a procession from the university campus and put up barricade on the highway at about 11.00am.

Due to the blockade, vehicular movement on the busiest highway came to a halt creating long tailbacks and causing immense suffering to the commuters.
