The overall flood situation remained mostly stable with little improvement and also deterioration at places during the past 24 hours ending at 6:99am Friday in the Brahmaputra basin, official and local sources said.

The major rivers marked both rises and falls and the situation might start improving during the next 48 hours as the pressure of onrushing waters from the upstream reduced during the period, officials in the Water Development Board (WDB) told in the afternoon.

The Brahmaputra was still flowing above the damager mark (DM) by 26cm at Fulchhari, 18cm at Bahadurabad, Jamuna by 13cm at Sariakandi and Dharla was flowing above its DM by 2cm at Kurigram points at 6:00am Friday.

Following recession in the water during the past 24 hours, the Teesta was flowing just at its DM at Dalia point in Nilphamari while it was flowing below its DM by 121 cm at Kawnia and 48cm at Sundarganj points.

Besides, the Brahmaputra was flowing below its DM by 92cm at  Noonkhawa and 25cm at Chilmari and Jamuneswari was flowing below the DM by 131cm at Badarganj points in the morning.

With little improvement of the situation, the Kartoa was flowing below its DM by 85cm at Panchagarh, Punorvoba by 13cm at Dinajpur, Tangon by 62cm at Thakurgaon and the Upper Atrai was flowing 152cm below its DM at Bhushirbandar points this morning. WBD's Executive Engineer Rezaul Mostafa Asafuddowla of Gaibandha and District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer (DRRO) of Kurigram Anwar Hossain said the flood situation would continue improving during the coming days.

According to the local union parishad chairmen, incidents of erosion started threatening several riverside points along the courses of the Dharla, Brahmaputra, Teesta, Ghaghot and Jamuna devouring few houses with lands and properties during the past few days.

Officials in the WDB and local public representatives said floodwaters of the Teesta started receding and most of the displaced people of different villages in Nilphamari and Lalmonirhat would soon return their homes.

Meanwhile, Kurigram district administration has already allocated 100 tonnes rice and Gaibandha district administration 50 tonnes rice and Taka 1.5 lakh to assist the flood and erosion-hit people of these two districts and are closely monitoring the situation.

Rangpur Divisional Director (Health) Dr Shahadat Hossain told BSS that no spread of water borne diseases was reported and medical teams have been kept ready to provide medicare service to the flood-hit people when and where necessary in the division.
