Civil society members on Wednesday demanded imposing a ban on politics of Jamaat-e-Islami under anti- terrorism act as the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has repeatedly termed this political party as a terrorist body through its several verdicts.

There is no logic of not banning Jamaat's politics as the ICT termed the party as a terrorist body in its several verdicts on war criminals, they said.

The members of civil society gave their opinion in reaction to today's verdict against Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid.

The International Crimes Tribunal-2 today handed down capital punishment to Mujahid for committing crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War. During pronouncing the verdict on Wednesday, the tribunal again termed Jamaat-e-Islami as a terrorist organization.

Muktijuddha Jadughar trustee Dr Sarwar Ali said heinous activities of Jamaat-e-Islami were not finished by the atrocities during the War of Liberation. The party has been involved in terrorist activities in last 42 years and is now trying to save its leaders through such activities.

"The government should take strong stand against them (Jamaat-e-Islami), there is no logic of not banning its politics," he said.

Saying that the government should make appeal against the verdict on Ghulam Azam, Ali said the government should do it as people are not satisfied with the verdict.

Journalist Shahin Reza Nur son of martyr Sirajuddin Hossain, said he felt relief after hearing the death penalty of Mujahid.

"Not only individual, Jamaat-e-Islami as an organization should be tried at the ICT," he said.

President of Sammilito Sangskritik Jote Nasiruddin Yusuf said the verdict fulfilled the people's long-cherished expectation.

"We are satisfied and grateful to the court for the death sentence to Mujahid who was involved in killing of intellectuals," he said.

Historian Muntasir Mamun said, "We give thanks to the court for delivering proper judgment. Souls of martyrs would get peace for the verdict," he said.

Mamun said the quarter that hoisted national flag in Mujahid's car should seek apology to the nation.
