Dhaka: A young man was hacked to death allegedly by ruling party men at Savar off the capital city on Wednesday night over establishing supremacy in the locality.
The victim was identified as Mintu Dhar (30), son of conch shell trader Chittoranjan Das residing at Savar Bhattpara. Besides, he was an associate of local Jubo League leader Pradeep Malakar.
The incident took place at Sabujbagh Mahalla in Savar municipality area at about 11-30 pm.
The victim’s family sources said Awami League Vice President for the Ward No. 3 under Savar Municipality, Sarwar Bhandari, and his son Swapan called out to Mintu on Wednesday night.
When he went out with them, an altercation took place between them. At one stage eight to ten people led by Sarwar and his son swooped on Mintu and hacked him indiscriminately. They left him there in a critical condition.
Then the locals rescued Mintu and took him to the Enam Medical College Hospital and later to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
He died at the DMCH under treatment later on Thursday morning.
A tense situation was prevailing in the locality of Mintu over the incident. The locals feared that a fierce clash might take place between the two groups any time.
Savar Model Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Shamsuzzaman confirmed the incident and said the body was sent to the DMCH for autopsy.
