Savar: Hours after his announcement to quit, Jahangirnagar University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Anwar Hossain on Wednesday night said he has decided to continue with his job.

 “As the general students as well as the government want me to stay on as the Vice Chancellor, I’ve withdrawn my resignation,”   Dr Anwar said in front of his official residence on the campus as students gathered there at about 11.20pm.

The Vice Chancellor earlier announced his resignation from his post following an attack on his residence on Tuesday night.

The JU VC announced his decision at about 4:15pm at a press conference at the Senate Hall after a meeting of the university Syndicate, said campus sources.

Anowar Hossain said, “JU teachers Association has asked for my resignation over Tuesday’s incident and I have decided to quit accepting their demand.” 

Teachers of the university gave 72 hours ultimatum to VC demanding his resignation and announced that they would boycott all classes until he resigned at the seminar room of Zahir Raihan auditorium at about 1.30 pm.

Students alleged to be activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir of the university attacked his home and vandalized it following death of Abdul Malek, a fourth year student of JU, said campus sources.

On Wednesday morning, a seven-member probe body, headed by university Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Forhad Hossain, was formed to investigate the attack on JU VC's residence on Tuesday evening over the death of a fourth year student.

"The probe body has been asked to submit its report within 15 working days . . . it will also summit reports on the death of the student in details," Vice Chancellor Prof Anowar Hossain told journalists after a JU syndicate meeting on Wednesday noon.

The other committee members are: university proctor, syndicate members and representatives of teacher association, he added.

Prof Anowar alleged activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir, student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, on Tuesday evening vandalized residences of JU VC, Teachers' Association President Ajit Kumar Majumdar, Maulana Bhashani Hall provost, administrative building and medical center.

He said "They also vandalized and torched the 'Ganojagaron Manch' which was staged adjacent to the JU campus" demanding death penalties of the identified war criminals including Abdul Quader Molla who was earlier sentenced to life-term imprisonment by the International Crime Tribunals (ICT) recently.

The university authorities file a case mentioning the loss of the attack, the VC added. Witnesses said, Abdul Malek, 23, a final year student of Statistics Department and a resident of

Bhasani Hall of the university died of stroke at around 6pm on Tuesday.
