Dhaka: National Press Club memberships of Jamaat-e-Islami leaders Abdul Quader Mollah and Muhammad Kamaruzzaman were cancelled on Wednesday.

The managing committee of the National Press Club took the decision at a meeting presided over by its president Kamal Uddin Sabuj.

Quader Mollah and Kamaruzzaman were shown arrested on July 13 in 2010 on charges of killing 345 people during the country's Liberation War in 1971.

The International Crimes Tribunal-2 on February 5, sentenced Quader Mollah, assistant secretary general of Jamaat, to life in prison for committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War.

But many people, including Dhaka University students, rejected the life term and waged a non-stop Shahbagh Spring sit-in demo demanding death sentence to Quader Mollah which was joined by tens of thousands of people from all walks of life.

The 65-year-old has been found guilty of five war crimes charges and acquitted from another.

In two of the five incidents, at least 350 Bangalees were killed and a girl was raped for each of which the three-member tribunal awarded him life sentence (30 years).

He also got 15 years' imprisonment for his complicity in each of the three other criminal offences in which six people were killed.

On June 4 last year, the court framed seven charges of crimes against humanity against Kamaruzzaman, senior assistant secretary general of Jamaat.

On June 4, the tribunal indicted Kamaruzzaman, 60, with seven charges of crimes against humanity committed during the Liberation War.

Six of the seven charges were for his involvement in crimes, including murder, torture, abduction and confinement.

Born in Sherpur, Kamaruzzaman was president of Islami Chhatra Sangha in greater Mymensingh in 1971. The pro-Jamaat student body was later renamed Islami Chhatra Shibir.
