Dhaka: The Election Commission will sit in a meeting on Thursday to take decision on cancellation of registration of the Jamaat-e-Islami.

The legal wing of the EC has already been asked to examine in details the country's constitution, the RPO (Representation of People's Order) and the inconsistencies in the Jamaat's constitution with the existing laws of the land.

Talking to reporters on the issue at his EC Secretariat office this noon, Election Commissioner Brig Gen (Retd) Md Zabed Ali said, "The Election Commission extended time for Jamaat-e-Islami on a number of occasions to bring amendments to its constitution."

He said that the EC had allowed the Jamaat two months time-extension for the purpose at the latest, which had expired on February 5.

"The Election Commission shares an identical view with the people's expectations," the Election Commissioner said adding: "We have participated in the 'mass silent demonstration programme' for three minutes from 4:00 pm Tuesday expressing our solidarity with the new generation."

He said the EC has now been working on taking decision in the light of the laws of the land on cancellation of the registration of the Jamaat-e-Islami.

Zabed Ali said that the EC would thoroughly examine Article 7 and 38 of the country's constitution and section 66 of the RPO to determine whether the constitution of Jamaat contradicts with the aforesaid articles of country's constitution and the particular section of RPO.
