Peace to be restored if opposition men put behind bars: Quamrul

Dhaka: In a counter argument to BNP leaders’ claim, State Minister for Law Quamrul Islam said, peace will be restored in the country if the opposition BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami leaders who have been threatening to kill people and spark off unrest are put behind bars. The minister said this while formally opening the national council of Bangladesh Construction Labourers’ Union at Supreme Court Bar Association auditorium on Friday. Pointing to leaders of the BNP-led opposition Quamrul Islam said, “Your attitude and activities will determine who will be kept out of prison and who will be kept behind bars. However big leader you could be, your violent activities would be dealt with iron hand.” “It is really pathetic that most top leaders of a political party are put behind bars for their violent and destructive activities. But the reality is that those who have been put behind bars are leaders of terrorists,” said Quamrul. He asaid, “BNP-Jamaat had gone out of senses to foil the trial of war criminals. They are unleashing errorism and anarchy to drive the nation towards the dark days of 1975. So people will have to get united for resisting them.” President of the labour union Rabiul Islam presided over the council session which was addressed among others by AL Advisory Council member and minister without portfolio Suranjit Sengupta, State Minister for Industry Omar Faruk Chowdhury and Bangladesh Trade Union Centre president Shahidullah Chowdhury. On Thursday, BNP-led 18-party alliance leaders said, restoration of the caretaker government will bring back peace in the country, but if the ruling grand alliance did not restore it then it would be held responsible for any disorder caused by their action. Leaders of the 18-party alliance told this while addressing a rally in front of the BNP’s Nayapaltan central office demanding release of its detained leaders, safe return of ‘disappeared’ BNP leader M Ilyas Ali and restoration of the caretaker government on Thursday afternoon.
