Dhaka:  Omar Faruq Talukder, assistant personal secretary (APS) to former railway minister Suranjit Sengupta, surrendered before the Metropolitan Session Judge’s Court on Tuesday in a case filed by ACC over wealth beyond known source of income.

He surrendered before the court at about 11:00am and sought bail. The hearing on his bail plea is expected to be held within few minutes. 

On Monday, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) submitted charge-sheet against Omar Faruq Talukder in a case filed over wealth beyond known source of income.

ACC assistant director SM Rashedur Raja submitted the charge-sheet to Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

On November 19, ACC approved the charge sheet against Omar Faruq and Eastern Railway general manager (GM) Yusuf Ali Mridha.

On August 14, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed cases against them as they concealed information in their submitted wealth statements.

ACC has approved filing of another case against Yusuf Ali Mridha for his alleged involvement in bribery for railway appointments.

On May 14, ACC issued notice on Faruq, Mridha and Enamul to submit their wealth statements within seven working days.

On April 9, Omar Faruq and Yusuf Mridha were detained with Tk 74 lakh by Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel in front of the main gate of BGB headquarters in the city.

On April 15, general manager of Bangladesh Railway (East) Yusuf Ali Mridha and Divisional Commandant Enamul Huq were suspended over the midnight money scandal.

Later, railway minister Suranjit Sengupta’s Assistant Personal Secretary (APS) Omar Faruq was sacked over the money scandal.

On April 16, Awami League Leader Suranjit Sengupta resigned as the railway minister following the scandal.
