Dhaka: Awami League joint general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif on Tuesday said it has been proved that BNP doesn't want non-party neutral government by withdrawing its notice on adjournment motion regarding discussion in the Jatiya Sangsad (Parliament) on the system of government during the election.

"BNP's demand for holding of free and fair election is not true in the real sense of the term following withdrawal of their notice on adjournment motion. Their main demand is to save the war criminals under the cover of restoration of caretaker government," he said.

Hanif, also special assistant to the Prime Minister, said this while speaking as the chief guest at an extended meeting of Dhaka City Awami League at its Bangabandhu Avenue office in the city.

Dhaka City Awami League (AL) organised the extended meeting as preparatory to holding of elite gathering in all the parliament constituencies in the capital.

Leaders of the Awami League-led 14-party alliance, local elites and intellectuals including teachers, doctors, engineers, journalists, lawyers, leaders of the trade bodies and a cross section of professionals are likely to address the planned elite gatherings.

Acting president of Dhaka City AL MA Aziz chaired the extended meeting, also addressed, among others, by general secretary Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya (Bir Bikram) and senior joint secretary and state minister for law Advocate Quamrul Islam.

Besides, City AL leaders including vice-presidents Faezuddin Miah and Mukul Chowdhury, joint secretary Haji Md Selim, organising secretary Shahe Alam Murad, publicity and publication secretary Abdul Huq Sabuj, office secretary Shahidul Islam Milon and Ilyas Uddin Mollah, MP, were present.

Hanif said BNP hatched many conspiracies for toppling the government over the past four and a half years but Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina along with the people faced their conspiracies very appropriate way.

"The opposition's conspiracy for ouster of the government is still on. They are hatching conspiracies in many ways. Our leaders and workers shall have to remain alert in their localities so that they do not succeed in their evil design," the Awami League leader said.

Calling upon the opposition to return to the Jatiya Sangsad (Parliament), Hanif said, "If you don't return to the House people will think that you have turned up at the parliament only to retain your membership and for your salaries and perks."

The AL joint general secretary urged the party leaders and workers to strengthen the party in every city ward, union and thana areas prior to the election to Dhaka City Corporation.

Advocate Quamrul Islam said there would never be any non-elected government in the country as the people don't want to see any non- elected administration in the helm of state affairs even for a day.
