Dhaka: Opposition BNP Standing Committee member MK Anwar on Wednesday said his party will not take part in the general elections without restoration of the non-party caretaker government system for monitoring the polls.

“The BNP will not take part in any election under Sheikh Hasina, the ruling Awami League government or under any other leader of the ruling party at the helm of power,” he said.

The senior leader of the party came up with the observation while speaking at a discussion meeting at the National Press Club.

The BNP lawmaker said, “The government wants to hold the next general elections unilaterally under the ruling party in power without restoring the interim government shunning the demand of the 90 percent people of the country.”

“But, we will in no way allow the government to do so as the upsurge of people against this repressive regime can’t be prevented by repression, arrest, killing and coercion.”

MK Anwar also criticized the recent activities of the government saying state sponsored terrorism, mass killing of people in the name of restoring order.

Shifting his focus to proven corruption in the proposed Padma Bridge, he said: “The government has soured its relations with World Bank failing to probe proven corruption against its few ministers and ruling party high-ups who were directly involved in massive corruption.”

The discussion meeting was also addressed, among others, by president of Youth Forum Muhammad Saidur Rahman, JAGPA president Shafiul Alam Prodhan and LDP joint secretary general Sahadat Hossain Selim.
