Jatiya Party, the main ally of the Awami League led Mahajote (grand alliance) today extended its support to grand alliance-backed mayoral candidate Azmat Ullah Khan in Gazipur City Corporation election.
The support came when Jatiya Party (JP) Chairman Hussain Mohammad Ershad announced it at a press conference at Gulshan in the city at about 2:00pm.
The announcement of JP Chairman removed all speculations, doubts and smoke screen that had created over the support of JP in crucial Gazipur mayoral election that has already caught the attention of entire nation.
"The Jatiya Party is announcing its support to grand alliance backed- candidate Azmat Ullah Khan to remove the confusions, which has been created over Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) election," said JP Chairman HM Ershad.
He asked his party leaders, workers to start campaign in favour of Azmat Ullah Khan in the polls to be held on July 6.
"As a component of the Awami League-led grand alliance, Jatiya Party will work for Azmat," Ershad said.
The speculations started immediately after candidature of JP Presidium member and president of party's Gazipur districts unit Brig Gen (retd) Kazi Mahmud Hasan. Later, he withdrew his candidature of mayoral post.
Earlier, the ruling party-backed mayoral candidate Azmat Ullah Khan met Ershad and sought his support and blessings for the July 6 polls.
Workers of Gazipur city JP led by its president Monwar Hossain are working for AL favourite Azmat Ullah Khan.
