Bangladesh wants India's help to identify graves of the martyred freedom fighters who were buried in the Indian territory during the Liberation War of 1971.

The identification of the burial spots of the 1971 Liberation War heroes was discussed, among other issues, at a two-day meeting of officials of Bangladesh and India that began on Wednesday in Agartala city, capital of the Indian state of Tripura.

The present Bangladesh government took initiatives to protect the graves of freedom fighters who were buried in the Indian territory with the help of Indian authorities.

West Tripura District Magistrate Kiran Gitte led the Indian side at the meeting, while the Bangladesh team was headed by Deputy Commissioner of Brahmanbaria district Nur Mohammad Majumder.

"If Bangladesh officials give us the list of the graves, we would definitely try to locate those burial places of freedom fighters," an Indian official told reporters.

He said, "The two-day meeting was aimed to discuss problems relating to border fencing, trans-border crimes and smuggling and maintenance of border pillars."

"The Bangladesh government also has been objecting to the fencing at the zero line," he said.

Officials of the Indian Border Security Force (BSF), Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Bangladesh police and customs were also present at the meeting.
