Dhaka: The ministry of education in a bold move closed down a private Islamic University set up illegally by violating the existing law of the land.

The Education Ministry sealed the private university with the help of the ministry of home affairs, said education ministry sources on Monday.

Madinatul Islamic University was set up illegally at Argunpara under Baghmara upazila in Rajshahi and was function for long without approval from the University Grants Commission. Regarding closure of the university Additional Secretary of the Education Ministry’s University section said, “A letter has been sent to the ministry of home affairs for closure of the illegal university. Copy of the letter will also be sent to Rajshahi District Commissioner and police super.  

Earlier the UGC conducted investigation into the private university and found that it was set up illegally and was functioning without UGC approval. Then UGC asked the Ministry of Education to close down the illegal university. Sources at UGC said on September 9, 2012, the illegal university published an advertisement in newspapers for manpower recruitment. Following that advertisement the UGC launched an investigation and found that the university had never took any approval from any authorities concerned for setting up the university.

Letters sent to education ministry

In a letter to the home ministry, the ministry of education said, an illegal private university styled Argunpara Madinatul Islamic University was functioning illegally without any sort of approval from the concerned government authorities at Argunpara under Baghmara in Rajshahi and asked the home ministry to take measures for its closure. The university has no approval from the UGC and has been functioning illegally violating law. So it is necessary to close down the university for good and evict it from its present address for illegal functioning.
