Rajshahi: An indefinite transport strike, called by transport workers to press home their demands, is underway on Monday in eight districts in the division.

Movements of all types of vehicles remained suspended from the morning cutting the link with the capital and other districts.

Transport workers enforced the indefinite strike in the division to press home their 10-point demand.

The demands include immediate issuance of appointment letters to the transport workers, enhancement of monthly salary, issuance of driving licence on easy terms, ban on plying of Nasimon and Karimon on highways, removal of roadside markets, and an end to harassment in the name of police checking on the roads and highways.

At a press conference held at Bogra Press Club on June 27, Kamal Hossain Robi, secretary of the regional committee of Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Sramik Federation, threatened to go on an indefinite strike from July 1 if their demands were not met by June 30.

He also accused the authorities concerned of harassing the truckers on different bridges in the name of checking and demanded immediate steps to stop illegal toll collection on Singra, Dinajpur and Mohananda bridges.

Abdul Latif, president of Rajshahi Regional Committee of Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Sramik Federation, said they will go on an indefinite strike from 6:00am today as the authorities concerned have failed to meet the demand within the deadline.
