Dhaka: Around 200 workers of the Rose Dresses garments factory located at Jamgara area of Ashulia in suburban Savar fell sick after drinking water yet again following two such incidents of water poisoning.

The garment factory authorities have declared holiday in the factory following the third such incident in the RMG hub since June. 

The water poisoning victims were taken to local women and children health centre and Nightangle Medical College and Hospital with critical illness. Around eight thousands workers work at the factory.

Earlier on June 28, around 100 workers fell sick after taking breakfast at the same factory. The factory remained closed on Saturday for food poisoning.  

On June 29, around 300 workers fell sick after drinking water following resumption of work at the factory.  And the factory remained closed the following day.

A worker, Sultana Akhtar, said after resuming work she took a glass of water from the factory tap and started felling unwell a few minutes later. After drinking the water some of the workers felt that their throat and stomach were burning with serious pain and many of them started vomiting and many of the workers lost their consciousness.

Savar thana health and family planning official Dr Mosharraf Hossain said, “A team of physicians has already been sent to the spot for looking into the cause of the incident.”

“After Sunday’s incident of poisoning, the water sample of the factory has already been sent to lab for testing. But the test results are yet to be delivered by the lab. The test results could be delivered on Wednesday,” said Dr Mosharraf.

BGMEA current president Atiqul Islam is the owner of the Rose Dresses garment factory.
