Sylhet: The District and Sessions Judge Court here Thursday awarded life-term rigorous imprisonment to eight persons and various terms to four others for their involvement in a double murder at a village under Companyganj in 2008.

District and Sessions Judge of Sylhet Mizanur Rahman pronounced the verdict in presence of all the convicts. The court also acquitted four others as they were found innocent.

The life-term convicts are Abdus Shahid, Abdus Sobhan, Abul Kawsar, Sona Miah, Lal Miah, Abdullah, Hira Miah and Nindu Miah.

The court also fined Taka ten thousand to each, in default, to suffer six more months. The court recorded statements of 19 prosecution witnesses out of 32 during the trial.

Court sources said two accused died during the trial while trial of two others were halted by a High Court order.

Faruk Mia and his younger brother Akol Miah of Bowla village under Companyganj Upazila were killed by their opponents following a dispute over a land of a mosque on January 13, 2008.

Later, Md Khalilur Rahman, Motttowali of the mosque, filed a case with Companyganj thana and Sub-Inspector Monoz Kanti Das submitted charge sheet against 20 people on July 8, 2008.
