Dhaka: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday said from now on local government elections should have political party affiliations.
“From now on, I think, local body elections should be held on party basis,” she said while inaugurating buses provided by India under its one-billion dollar Line of Credit (LoC) at Ganobhanban in the morning.
National issues had little impact on the five city corporation elections, she said.
Elections to four city corporations – Khulna, Rajshahi, Sylhet and Barisal – were held on June 15 while another new city corporation – Gazipur – went to its maiden polls on July 6.
Though non-partisan in nature, both the ruling and the opposition camps unofficially extended support to their own candidates in the elections.
Opposition-backed candidates came out winners in all the polls.
