Dhaka: Anti-liberation Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami is plotting to call a two-day hartal for February 13 and 14 in the pretext of hindering its protest rally set for Tuesday, an authoritative source in the party said.

Currently the opposition party has been engaged in anti-government movement demanding scrapping of the International Crimes Tribunal and also to press for release of the party’s top leaders facing war crimes trial at the tribunal.    

In a press statement issued on Sunday, Jamaat called a protest demonstration for Tuesday across the country against conviction of its leader Abdul Quader Mollah on war crimes charges. Acting secretary of Jamaat Rafiqul Islam Khan issued the press statement.

Jamaat leader Rafiqul Islam Khan said, “The tribunal should be allowed to run independently without putting pressure on it, otherwise justice can no way be ensured. Now a minister has announced an amendment to the ICT Act as part of implementing the ruling party’s political vendetta and vengeance. This is a testimony to what the Jamaat leaders feared from the very beginning of the trial that they would not get justice from the special tribunal formed for trial of war criminals.”

Regarding the mass people’s upsurge in Shahbagh, Rafiqul said, “The ruling party is holding protest rally in the capital’s Shahbagh area and other parts of the country by gathering their own people and spreading hatred against Jamaat-Shibir among the people and pushing the country towards anarchy through conpiracies.”
