Dhaka: The alleged mastermind of schoolboy Parag abduction case, Mukter Hossain Amir, was arrested in the early hours of Saturday following a brief gunfight with plainclothes police in Tongi, Gazipur.

Police said Amir, notoriously called Lengra Amir, was caught after he had suffered bullet injuries during the gun-battle at a rented house at Tongi.

A team of Detective Branch (DB) of police conducted a drive at a house on Pilagathi-Singbari Squibt road around 3:30am, said Assistant Commissioner Sanwar, who was the team leader.

Amir opened fire on the law enforcers from inside the house when he sensed their presence, prompting the law enforcers to retaliate, which left Amir injured.

The police had raided the Tongi house acting on information provided by his associates.

Amir was arrested along with his wife Beauty, 35, and domestic help Ruma, 22. Police said

two pistols and 85 bullets were also seized from the scene.

He was first admitted to Tongi Hospital and later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital at around 8:00am.

Three policemen -- inspector Mejbah Uddin Ahmed and sub-inspectors Azizul and Momin-- also sustained injuries during the drive.

Earlier, police arrested Amir’s associate Aminul from Rajbari early Wednesday.

Armed criminals kidnapped Parag Mandal, a Shubhadda Banglabazar Heed International School student, by shooting his mother Lipi Rani Mondol, sister Pinaki Mondol and their driver Nazrul Islam in the morning on November 11 from near their house.

Three days later, the family of the abducted minor boy got him back following a reported payment of ransom, a claim that triggered controversies.
