Dhaka: The government has taken steps to establish 11 high schools and six colleges in Dhaka ensuring access to education for all as the population of the capital city is on the rise, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid told Parliament on Monday.

 “We’ve taken the steps under the Prime Minister’s special initiative because the population of Dhaka is increasing largely,” he told the House while responding to a supplementary question of Nurul Islam BSc (Ctg-8).

Nahid said the government is giving priority to those parts of the city where the rate of population is high ensuring education for all, report agencies.

He also informed that the government would establish 306 government high schools in 360 upazilas where there is no government school.

 “The project has already been approved and works on almost 100 schools have progressed significantly,” the Education Minister said, adding that the schools will be named as ‘Model High School’ with modern facilities.

He also said that the government would consider proposal of establishing more government schools in Chittagong. The government has approved the proposal of upgrading century-old renowned Kajem Ali High School in Chittagong to higher secondary level.

Responding to a starred question of M Shahiduzzaman Sarker (Naogaon-2), Nahid said the government has a plan to set up technical school in each upazila of the country. “A project in this regard has been taken… efforts are on despite limitation of resources.”

While replying to another question of Hafiz Uddin Ahmed (Thakurgaon-3), he said at present, the number of non-MPO but approved educational institutions in the country totaled 5,023.
