Dhaka: An assistant judge was arrested along with 700 bottles of Phensidyl and a revolver in the capital city’s New Market area on Saturday night.

The arrestee was identified as Javed Imam, 30, an assistant judge of Bhola district.

Acting on a tip-off, Sergeant Mizanur Rahman of New Market Police Station in Dhaka halted a Noah microbus carrying Javed near New Market Petrol Pump at about 7.30pm and challenged him that there were narcotics in his vehicle, DC (Ramna) Syed Nurul Islam told a press briefing at the police station.

The DC said Javed, who hails from Jhenidah, was coming from Jessore.

After searching the vehicle, Islam said, police recovered the Phensidyl bottles packed in a sack and two cartons, and a revolver.

Javed was then taken to the New Market Police Station. During preliminary investigation in the police station, Javed confessed to the police that a drug peddler, Shovan of Jessore, gave him the consignment of the drug to reach it to a specific place in Dhaka for an amount of Tk 1.20 lakh in kickback.

Javed, an LLB graduate from Rajshahi University, however, claimed that the revolver belongs to him and he has a valid license of it. He joined the Judicial Service in 2008, DC Nurul Islam said.
