Dhaka: Home Minister Dr Mohiuddin Khan Alamagir Tuesday said eight suspected killers of tailor Bishwajit Das were arrested.

"Eight so called students were arrested on charge of Bishwajit murder . . . but they are not involved in pro-Awami League Chharta League politics," he said while speaking at a discussion at Dhaka Reporters Unity at Segunbagicha in the capital.

The minister Tuesday claimed this a day after issuing directives to the authority concerned to take appropriate actions (against the killers) after investigations.

Meanwhile, talking to BSS, a DB official, preferring anonymity, told that they have identified six persons including four students.

"But their political identity is not clear right now," he said adding "Law enforcement agency identified the suspected killers of Bishwajit through examining video-footage of the attack and talking to people at the neighbourhood who witnessed the murder to track the killers down."

Earlier, investigation officer (IO) and also sub-inspector of Sutrapur police station Mahbubul Alam told BSS that police launched an investigation into the killing as an officer of Sutrapur Police Station lodged a case being the complainant as none of his relatives complained to police.

"We are trying to find out the culprits watching video footage of different televisions news and reports of different newspapers and online media," the IO added.

Bishawjit Das was chopped to death by unidentified activists suspecting him to be a rival activist as he tried to take refuge on the first floor of building to evade the violence.

He was on his way to his own tailoring shop at Shakhari Bazar while he was declared dead after he was brought to the Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital, also known as Mitfort Hospital.
