Savar: At least 50 people were injured as garment workers clashed with police at different places of Ashulia under Savar upazile on Sunday turning the whole garment hub into a battlefield.
Workers of different garment units at Jamgarah, Narsinghapur, Unique Nishchintapur, Ghoshbag and Zirabo areas took to the streets in the morning and staged demonstrations to press home their various demands, including compensation for the families of the deceased and injured fire victims of Tazrin Fashion Limited.
They agitated workers put up barricade on Abdullah- Baipail road, disrupting traffic movement for an hour from 10:00 am. They also brought out procession in the industrial belt demanding compensation.
Transport movement on Abdullapur-Baipail road halted due to the chase-and-counter-chase.
A chase and counter-chase took place between police and RMG workers. The angry workers pelted brick-bats at police when the law enforcers lobbed teargas shells to disperse the rowdy workers.
Agitating workers said police charged baton on them as they brought out a procession at about 9:00am demanding compensation for November 24 fire victims.
Police officials said they are trying to bring the situation under control.
On November 24, at least 125 RMG workers were killed in a devastating fire at Tazrin Fashions Ltd at Ashulia of Savar upazila.
