Dhaka: The Dhaka regional committee of Bangladesh Transport Workers’ Federation on Tuesday called off its 48-hour transport strike in Dhaka division following positive assurance from the Communications Minister.

The committee on Saturday announced the strike call for Tuesday and Wednesday to press for its 7-point demands, including steps to free district transport workers’ union and owners’ association (Kaliakoir branch) office from illegal occupants, provide driving license to the drivers and renew the same without harassment, set up truck terminals in all districts, stop harassment and extortion by policemen, including highway police, fulfill all agreements signed with it by the government relating to reconstruction and renovation of roads and highways, lowering prices of all types of fuel oil and gas, including compressed natural gas (CNG).

The assurance came during a meeting with Communications Minister Obaidul Quader, held at the minister’s Secretariat office on Tuesday afternoon.

During the meeting, Quader said that steps will be taken to meet the number one demand of the Dhaka divisional transport workers within seven days while the other demands would be solved gradually.

He assured that the demand to renew the driving license will be resolved in an inter-ministerial committee meeting to be held in this regard and also after obtaining the court order in a case filed in this connection.

Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan, Bangladesh Road Transport Authority chairman M Ayubur Rahman, were, among others, present at the meeting.
